Swine flu in Mexico closes schools; Slippery Rock students return home

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Twenty-three Slippery Rock University seniors came back from Mexico early because of the swine flu scare, the university confirmed today.

University spokesman Karl Schwab said the students, who were student-teaching in Mexico City during their last semester, were scheduled to land this afternoon at Pittsburgh International Airport.

They had been in Mexico City since March 30, he said.

None of the students has reported being sick, he said.

Their plane, which landed earlier today in Atlanta before continuing to Pittsburgh, was met by representatives of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who distributed information on what to do to protect friends and family from exposure for the next several days. The students will not be quarantined, Schwab added.

The students, who were teaching in elementary and middle schools, did not come home early because of the swine-flu scare, Schwab said, but rather because the schools they were teaching in closed. All schools in Mexico are closed right now.

The students were to return Thursday anyway, he said. They are expected to attend graduation Saturday.

The students have been advised to go to their doctors at any sign of illness.
