Fight night

BROOKFIELD — Two full-contact title fights are slated for Saturday night at Yankee Lake in “Brawlroom XI. Gates open at 6 p.m. with the first fight at 7:30.

In a 185-pound middleweight bout, Youngstown firefighter Kevin Zalac (5-0) will meet Slippery Rock’s Mike Linza (5-0). Champion lightweight Joe Wagner (6-1) will meet Garret Sahene (4-1) in Wagner’s first title defense.

Several area brawlers will debut, including Thiel College’s Kyle Whetzel (who will fight Jimmy Pisano), Sharon’s Dom Cincicola (vs. John Knez), Mercer’s Gary Blair (vs. Stephen Misterka) and Hermitage’s Nate Glazier (vs. Jusean Foster).

Other fights on the U.S. Army sponsored card are: Scott Johnson vs. Chris Rodgers; Trent Williams vs. Kyle Hissem; Easton Johnston vs. Jared Rothart; Ben Mellring vs. Adam Stuart; Chase Seger vs. Josh Barker; Tommy Newman vs. Jesse Bogden; Alex Burt vs. Jeremiah Peak; Ron Bigley vs. Derek Fitzer; Alvin Worrels vs. Alex Carnathan; Max Lakeland vs. Eddie Hardison, and Andrew Riddle vs. Adam Milstead.

Softball teams play for cancer event

LISBON — The Hubbard, Ursuline, Lisbon and Howland High softball teams are teaming up for a “Cures for Cancer” round robin event on Saturday.

Proceeds will benefit cancer foundations. Players will wear pink socks and pink wristbands while the coaches will wear pink shirts.

Last year’s event raised more than $1,000.

Kernan Insurance Group will match up to $500 raised by the schools or any other contributors. Donations can be made payable to Ursuline High School and mailed to c/o Kernan Insurance Group, 3400 Canfield Road, Youngstown Ohio 44511.

The varsity tournament is scheduled for this Saturday at Lisbon. At 11 a.m., Lisbon plays Hubbard and Ursuline plays Howland. At 1 p.m., Howland plays Lisbon and Hubbard plays Ursuline.

Sharon Speedway

HARTFORD — The second annual Pro Stock Spectacular will be held Saturday at the Sharon Speedway.

There will be over $1,200 to win in qualifying, dash and heat races and much more.

Bowling hall of fame

YOUNGSTOWN — Applications to be selected for the 2009 Greater Youngstown Bowling Association Hall of Fame must be submitted by today.

Free Tai-Chi lessons Saturday

WARREN — It will be World Chinese Tai-Chi8 Day Sasturday beginning at 10 a.m. where two hours of free Tai-Chi and Qi-Gong lessons will be held at the Central Christian Church on East Market St.

Bowling for babies

GARRETTSVILLE — The second annual Bowling for Babies tournament will be held Saturday beginning at 9 p.m. at the Skylane Bowling Center on State Route 82 here.

Malone names coach

CANTON — Tim Walker, who has been the head men’s basketball coach at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., has been hired as the new head men’s basketball coach at Malone University.

NAHL awards

FRISCO, Texas — Byron Pool of the Bismarck Bobcats was named North American Hockey League coach of the year on Thursday.

Pool led Bismarck to the Central Division regular-season championship with a league-high 43 wins.
