Daffodil show this weekend at Fellows

staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Fellows Riverside Gardens’ Daffodil Show will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The show, presented by Mill Creek MetroParks, is one of 41 shows this spring throughout the United States in association with the American Daffodil Society. Entries from the general public will be accepted Saturday until 10 a.m. followed by judging, and then the show will be open for viewing.

A special feature of this year’s show is the first-time showing of Narcissus “Fellows Favorite,” a daffodil named for Fellows Riverside Gardens. This plant was hybridized by Brent and Becky Heath of Gloucester, Va., who named it in honor of the 50th anniversary of Fellows Riverside Gardens in 2008.

The new daffodil, planted the gardens for the first time in October 2008, is now in full bloom, just in time to be featured among the thousands of daffodils flowering in the gardens. The gardens are celebrating their first season as an official American Daffodil Society Display Garden.

This designation, the only one in Ohio, ranks Fellows Riverside Gardens among the best places to see daffodils in the country along with 18 other display gardens that have received the ranking. For more information, call the gardens at (330) 740-7116.
