WARREN — Police arrested a suspect on the same day the second victim died in a drive-by shooting that happened on Wick Street South East on April 13.

Warren police arrested 22-year-old Marcus Yager of Warren on Tuesday. He is charged with two counts of murder and was scheduled to appear in court this morning. Police said it’s possible more arrests could be made.

The shooting claimed the life of 11-year-old Lloyd McCoy Jr., who was visiting his young relative and sitting on the living room couch when dozens of bullets ripped through the home.

McCoy, who lived across the street from the home at 2290 Wick St., died at 7:08 a.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, the Mahoning County coroner’s office said.

The boy’s father, Lloyd Sr., said his son was about to come home any minute from the neighbor’s house where the shooting took place. The boy was there visiting his 3-year-old nephew, Joshua McCoy, who lived in the home, said Lloyd Sr., who also is the grandfather of the 3-year-old. Joshua was hit in the shoulder but is recovering well, McCoy family members said.

Lloyd Jr. was a sixth-grader at the Willard School who loved “all sports,” video games and fishing, his father said.

“He was just a great, loving kid,” Lloyd Sr. said, adding that the boy was happy to help out with chores such as carrying groceries.

Police said Marvin Chaney, 26, of Fifth Street Southeast, died of his injuries the day of the shooting.

Bob Dean, a Warren councilman, said he believes the weapon used was a high-powered rifle.

Dean said the home was hit with as many as 30 shots and that Lloyd and Joshua McCoy were sitting on the couch when shot.

Dean and others said they don’t ever recall that a child was killed in this type of purposeful way, such as a drive-by, in the city.

Warren school officials sent extra counselors and others into the Willard school building last week after the shooting took place and again today after they learned the boy had died.

The Mahoning County coroner’s office said a ruling is pending in the boy’s death.
