School threat unfounded
School threat unfounded
BOARDMAN — Monday’s closure of Byzantine Catholic Central School, Youngstown-Poland Road, followed school officials’ filing a police report of a potential threat involving a gun that turned out to be unfounded.
“On very short notice, we were checking into a report of a potential or perceived threat that an outside adult may be bringing a gun to school” Monday, said township police Capt. Jack Nichols.
The potential threat was reported to police about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The school canceled classes Monday, citing “water problems.”
Bernie Kosar Sr., school administrator, said school officials took precautions to safeguard students. Citing water problems was a way to downplay the seriousness of the problem and not cause panic, he added.
Nichols said police would continue to investigate, but “it appears at this point that the threat doesn’t exist and everything is OK.” Kosar said classes were to resume today. The threat was unfounded, he said.
