Klein named pitcher of week

INDIANAPOLIS — YSU baseball player Phil Klein was named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 12, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday.

Klein, a sophomore right-handed pitcher, threw seven scoreless innings to earn his second win in as many starts in Youngstown State’s 1-0 victory over Cleveland State Sunday. He struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing only five hits and three walks. In his last four outings, Klein has allowed only two earned runs spanning 21 innings.

In the classroom, Klein carries a 3.81 grade-point average as a finance major at YSU.

Football discipline

FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State has disciplined four football players. Three have been suspended after they were cited for drunken driving and another has been dismissed after he was charged with marijuana possession.

Coach Craig Bohl said Friday playing football is a privilege, not a right.

The three could be dismissed after their legal and disciplinary action is complete.

Backup quarterback Troy Jackson was thrown off the team. The coach said he had repeated off-field issues.

The team starts spring practice today. The Bison went 6-5 last year and open this season at Iowa State on Sept. 3. YSU plays at North Dakota State on November 21.

YOUNGSTOWN — There will be an open gym at the Arlington Heights Recreation Center every Tuesday and Thursday through May 28 from 7-9 p.m.

An open gym pass can be purchased at the Park and Recreation office in Youngstown City Hall or at Arlington Heights.

YOUNGSTOWN — Former lightweight world boxing champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini will be honored tonight at 7 p.m. at a dinner at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center.

The Alumni Club of Alpha Phi Delta fraternity made Mancini an honorable brother for his dedication to the Mahoning Valley.

Pacheco signed

SECAUCUS, N.J. — The New York Red Bulls signed defender Alfredo Pacheco and waived goalkeeper Alec Dufty on Friday.

The MLS team also moved midfielder Danleigh Borman from the senior roster to the developmental roster and announced that forward Macoumba Kandji has been granted asylum status by the league and is now considered a domestic player on the roster.

NEW YORK — Boowoogeemalia beat Hanna Can Fly by 73‚Ñ4 lengths Friday in the $43,000 allowance feature for New York-bred fillies and mares at Aqueduct.

The 4-year-old ridden by Cornelio Velasquez and trained by Rick Dutrow Jr. posted her second win in eight starts, running the 61‚Ñ2 furlongs in 1:17.49 on the fast track.

The 6-5 favorite, Boowoogeemalia paid $4.70, $3.20 and $2.50. Hanna Can Fly returned $7.10 and $3.90. Citifiesta paid $3.90 to show.

Quality Road works out

NEW YORK — Florida Derby winner Quality Road has completed a workout in preparation for next month’s Kentucky Derby.

The 3-year-old colt breezed three-quarters of a mile on Belmont Park’s training track in 1:12.03 on Friday.

Quality Road is showing no apparent problems from a slight quarter crack in his right hind foot. He will have one more workout before leaving for Churchill Downs on April 28.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkins said “he went good (and) a little faster than I intended.” The trainer said Quality Road’s foot also appeared to be all right.
