Dinner to benefit boy being treated for cancer

LISBON — A benefit spaghetti dinner for 15-month-old Luke Hull will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, 114 E. Washington St.

Carryouts are available from 4 to 6 p.m. Dinners are $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Luke is battling retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. His right eye had to be removed recently. He has now been diagnosed with cancer in his left eye. He is undergoing radiation treatment at the Cleveland Clinic. This treatment is imperative for vision in his left eye.

All proceeds will help offset the cost of Luke’s treatment.

Commissioners to talk about how to use funds

COLUMBIANA — The Mahoning and Columbiana county commissioners will meet at 2 p.m. Monday at Das Dutch Village Inn to outline how approximately $3.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds will benefit adult workers who need skills for the 21st-century workplace.

The money also will help prepare youths for employment. The six commissioners from the two counties will discuss the benefits of the funds.

Bert Cene, director of the Mahoning & Columbiana Training Association, will be present.

The MCTA is the organization that will administer the stimulus training and youth programs in the two counties.

Expect lane restrictions for road milling, paving

YOUNGSTOWN — State Route 193 in Youngstown from Oxford Avenue and Wirt Street to Gypsy Lane and Belmont Avenue will have various daytime lane restrictions for pavement milling. In addition, Wirt Street between Oxford Avenue and Delaware Avenue will have overnight lane restrictions for the replacement of pavement at the bus areas.

This work is part of a $1 million project to resurface Route 193 from the Trumbull County line to just north of Oxford Avenue in Youngstown as well as minor bridge work on U.S. 422/Route 193 over the Norfolk Southern railroad. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by mid-June.

Traffic changes planned during work on bridge

BOARDMAN — U.S. Route 224 eastbound over Mill Creek in Boardman is reduced to one lane next week for the placement of temporary pavement. Construction starts Monday.

Once completed, Route 224 over Mill Creek will be reduced to one lane in the westbound direction and two lanes in the eastbound direction.

Pinewood Drive as well as the adjacent drive to Mill Creek Park at 224 will close near the end of April. Updates will follow before these closures occur. This work is part of an $800,000 project to replace the bridge deck on the Route 224 bridge over Mill Creek. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by late September.

Rally in the Ridge offers chance for Akron race

MINERAL RIDGE — The Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby is having a Rally In The Ridge to give racers a chance to compete for a qualifying spot for the All-American Rally Championships in Akron.

Kids age 8 to 17 from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are invited to participate in the rally today and Sunday on Seaborn Street next to Mineral Ridge High School.

Andy Bowell, association president, said weigh-in begins at 7 a.m., with the races set to begin around 9 a.m. and run until the last car has crossed the finish line.
