Lower tax withholding increases paychecks

WASHINGTON – Starting this month, 95 percent of Ohio workers will keep more of their paychecks due to the implementation of a federal income tax credit, said U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

Employers must institute a lower tax withholding from their employees’ paychecks. This means that more than 110 million families— 4.5 million in Ohio — will see more money in their paychecks.

The “Making Work Pay” tax credit provides up to $400 for working individuals and $800 for married taxpayers over the course of the year. Families are expected to see at least a $65-per-month increase in take-home pay.

Obama’s task force seeks more time for GM decision

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama’s auto task force is asking for more time to reconsider its objection to General Motors’ deal to increase its credit commitments to Delphi by an additional $150 million.

The task force wants U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain to give it until April 30 to assess the situation of the Troy, Mich.-based auto parts supplier.

General Motors Corp. and Delphi Corp., GM’s former parts division, reached a deal last month for the sale of Delphi’s steering business back to GM. In connection, GM agreed to increase its credit commitments to Delphi to $450 million from $300 million.

$8M in grants to help laid-off autoworkers

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded more than $8 million in grants to assist laid-off autoworkers in Ohio.

The grants will help nearly 2,500 workers laid off at the General Motors truck plant in Moraine near Dayton, the Chrysler north assembly plant in Toledo, the GM Lordstown plant and 12 suppliers in Ohio.

The money will be used for counseling, job searches and follow-up services.
