City asked to boil water

HUBBARD— Hubbard residents are under a boil notification after a large water main break.

The break occurred on the 100 block of Erie Street just after 9 p.m. Sunday.

Patrick Camuso, foreman for the water department, said the break happened due to the age of the pipeline, and the situation was under control by approximately 11 p.m. Sunday.

“The biggest problem we had was a loss of pressure due to the size of the line that broke,” he said.

As a precaution, residents are asked to boil any water they use to cook with or drink through Wednesday.

Two attempt robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — A 17-year-old East Lucius Avenue boy was arrested after a delivery employee for a Main Moon restaurant identified him as one of the suspects involved in an attempted robbery Sunday evening.

The employee said he pulled into a driveway in the 300 block of East Ravenwood Avenue with a food order but decided to back out because the place looked vacant. He was then approached by two suspects, one of whom put a gun to his head and demanded his “stuff.” The employee kept on driving and called police.

Officers found two teenagers on East Ravenwood matching the suspects’ description, but police let one go around 9 p.m. because, at the time, they hadn’t located the victim to make an identification.

The suspect who was detained and eventually arrested on an aggravated-robbery charge had been wanted by juvenile court in an unrelated matter.

Student sets fire alarm

YOUNGSTOWN — A 17-year-old East High School boy seen on school surveillance video activating a fire alarm has been charged with inducing panic.

Police and administration began to evacuate the school building Sept. 26 until the alarm’s origin in a stairwell area was found and officials determined no fire or smoke was present. The fire department was told to disregard the alarm. A school administrator identified the student on the video, and he was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Drive seeks donations

The Jewish Community Relations Council’s 17th annual High Holiday Food Drive is planned through Oct. 23.

“One of the ‘mitzvahs,’ or commandments in Judaism, is to help the less fortunate. The idea of doing good deeds is scripturally based,” said Bonnie Deutsch Burdman, director of community relations and government affairs with the council.

The project begins as the High Holidays are observed with Rosh Hashana today and Yom Kippur on Oct. 9.

The council is seeking donations of nonperishable food and toiletry items.

Collection sites are Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown; Akiva Academy in the community center; Congregation Rodef Sholom, 1119 Elm St., Youngstown; Congregation Ohev Tzedek, 5245 Glenwood Ave., Boardman; Temple El Emeth and Children of Israel, 3970 Logan Way, Liberty; Beth Israel Temple Center, 2138 E. Market St., Warren; and Temple Beth Israel, 840 Highland Road, Sharon, Pa.

Donations will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and Community Food Warehouse of the Shenango Valley.
