Jewish group plans food drive

The Jewish Community Relations Council’s 17th annual High Holiday Food Drive is planned through Oct. 23.

“One of the ‘mitzvahs,’ or commandments in Judaism, is to help the less fortunate. The idea of doing good deeds is scripturally based,” said Bonnie Deutsch Burdman, director of community relations and government affairs with the council.

The project begins as the High Holidays are observed with Rosh Hashana Tuesday and Yom Kippur, Oct. 9.

The council is seeking donations of nonperishable food and toiletry items.

Collection sites are Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown; Akiva Academy in the community center; Congregation Rodef Sholom, 1119 Elm St., Youngstown; Congregation Ohev Tzedek, 5245 Glenwood Ave., Boardman; Temple El Emeth and Children of Israel, 3970 Logan Way, Liberty; Beth Israel Temple Center, 2138 E. Market St., Warren; and Temple Beth Israel, 840 Highland Road, Sharon, Pa.

Donations will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and Community Food Warehouse of the Shenango Valley.
