Youth Theatre to hold student acting classes

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre will hold after-school drama classes for pupils in grades 1-12, beginning Oct. 14.

Pupils in grades 1-3 may enroll in “Imagination Station,” which stresses physical, verbal and listening skills. The class will take cartoon and TV characters and create and perform shows for families and friends on the last day. Rachel Rossi is the instructor. The class will meet on Tuesdays, Oct. 14-Nov. 18, from 4-5 p.m.

Pupils in grades 4-6 can enroll in “Clue,” which will teach stage skills, voice and body techniques, characterization and story building. Students will develop an adventure mystery play, based on the board game “Clue.” The class will perform for an invited audience on the last day. It will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 15 to Nov. 19. Rachel Rossi is the instructor.

Students in grades 7-12 can learn improvisation in “Improv Workshop.” The class, which will develop poise and self confidence, will showcase its own version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on the last day. Designed for both beginning and experienced drama students, the class will meet on Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. Shawn Lockaton is the instructor.

Sunday lunch, concert series will return

YOUNGSTOWN — Stambaugh Auditorium will bring back its Sunday lunch and concert series, beginning Oct. 19. Misook Yun, a soprano, and pianist Joo Hwa Lee will celebrate Puccini’s 150th birthday in their performance on that day.

The popular series, which began last year, is held in Christman Hall, on the the third floor of Stambaugh. Each event begins with lunch at 12:30 p.m. and is followed by a concert at 1 p.m. Tickets are $23, and reservations are required. Call (330) 747-5175.

The remainder of the series is as follows: Dec. 7, Trinity Brass Quintet from Dana School of Music; Feb. 1, Nancy Paterson, harpist, and Linda Madsen, flutist; and April 26, Youngstown Connection.

Historical group plans fall festival

BERLIN CENTER — The Berlin Center Historical Society will present its Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Weidenmier House, west of state Route 534 on U.S. Route 224. Activities will include a tractor show, quilt raffle, cupcake decorating contest and other games and prizes. Entertainment will be by the Deerfield Dandies. Paul Olson will speak on Berlin Center in times past. The Weidenmier House will be open for tours, and quilts will be on display and for sale. The quilt to be raffled includes the blue ribbon it received at the Portage County Fair. Sandwiches, drinks and baked goods will also be on sale throughout the day. Admission is free. Documentary details voting irregularities

YOUNGSTOWN —The documentary “Stealing America: Vote by Vote” will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St. Filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman will answer questions. The film focuses on the irregularities of the last decade’s most egregious election voting anomalies. Fadiman uses first-person accounts, research and clips gleaned from the nightly news in her film. Admission is $3.

Music and Meatballs with college choir

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Westminster College Concert Choir will present its annual “Music and Meatballs” program Friday at New Wilmington Presbyterian Church. There will be three seating times: 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m., and 7 p.m.

This year’s musical and decoration theme is Disney. Dinner includes spaghetti and meatball, salad, bread, dessert, hot and cold beverages. The music will come from Disney movies.

The event benefits the choir, which will go on a tour of several states in January.

Tickets are $12 ($7 for seniors, students and children). Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (724) 946-7270. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door and takeouts will also be available.
