Today is Friday, Sept. 26, the 270th day of 2008. There are 96 days left in the year. On this date in 1789, Thomas Jefferson is appointed America’s first secretary of state.

In 1777, British troops occupy Philadelphia during the American Revolution. In 1892, John Philip Sousa and his newly formed band perform publicly for the first time, at the Stillman Music Hall in Plainfield, N.J. In 1914, the Federal Trade Commission is established. In 1918, the Meuse-Argonne offensive against the Germans begins during World War I. In 1955, following word that President Eisenhower had suffered a heart attack, the New York Stock Exchange sees its worst price decline since 1929. September 26, 1958: Atty. Elton W. Luckhart, vice chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Committee, says organized labor refused to endorse Gov. C. William O’Neill because he took a stand in favor of the right-to-work amendment and for democratically controlled labor unions.

One of Canfield’s most widely known artisans, John Allen Flick, a self made man who worked himself up from a rough carpenter to an expert cabinetmaker, celebrates his 99th birthday.

The Ohio Bell Telephone Co. admits Ohltown and Mineral Ridge residents need to have direct service with Youngstown subscribers. Phones in those areas are served through Niles, making calls to Youngstown toll calls.

September 26, 1933: Dr. H.G. Southard, director of the state board of health, recommends a sanitary district embracing all Mahoning River communities from Warren to Lowellville as a necessary step toward proper disposal of sewage in the Mahoning Valley.

Superintendent George E. Roudebush says enrollment in city schools on the first day of classes was between 33,800 and 33,900, the largest number ever on opening day in Youngstown schools.
