Chili cook-off will help the Beatitude House

Friday, September 26, 2008

GIRARD — The Youngstown Parrothead Club will host its second annual cornhole tournament and chili cook-off Oct. 11 at Creekside Golf Dome, 1300 N. State St., to benefit the Beatitude House.

The club is a nonprofit group of Jimmy Buffett fans that supports environmental causes and community issues. The Beatitude House, sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters, helps disadvantaged women and children in the Mahoning Valley, through counseling, education and transitional housing.

Cornhole registration is $20 per person through Wednesday. If space permits, registration after Wednesday will be $25. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. Sign-in on Oct. 11 begins at 10 a.m. and the tournament begins at noon.

Registration for the cook-off is $30 per team by Wednesday. The cost to sign up after Wednesday is $40 per team, if space is still available. Trophies and plaques will be awarded to the top three teams, and judges include Mayor James Melfi, WKBN 570 AM’s Dan Rivers, WKBN TV-27’s Whitney Ward and state Sen. Bob Hagan of Youngstown.

Sign-in for the cook-off begins at 9 a.m., and teams can begin cooking at 10 a.m. For $5 admission, spectators can sample the chili beginning at noon. Cooking teams can have up to four members and a minimum of 5-10 gallons of chili must be made. Tables and chairs will be provided for teams, which must supply their own cooking tools.

Electricity for cooking will not be provided, so teams must come up with another method to cook, such as a propane turkey fryer.

Chinese and silent auctions are planned for the event. For more information, or to register, visit www.youngstownparrotheadclub.com.
