pavlik roundup News and notes

Sunday, September 21, 2008

Up next: Top Rank Boxing has been in preliminary discussions with Arthur Abraham’s handlers about a Pavlik-Abraham bout in 2009. Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs), the IBF middleweight champion, is scheduled to fight Raul Marquez on Oct. 4 in Germany. Abraham’s promoters seem to be leaning toward a bout with Ronald “Winky” Wright in February, meaning a Pavlik-Abraham bout wouldn’t take place until the summer. Pavlik’s co-manager, Cameron Dunkin, said although Abraham is on the radar, they need to worry about Bernard Hopkins first. “One at a time,” Dunkin said. “This one isn’t easy.” Pavlik may fight one of his mandatory middleweight challengers in the interim between Hopkins and Abraham.

On the move: Pavlik’s trainer, Jack Loew, said he plans to move into the new Southside Boxing Club building on Market Street a week after the Oct. 18 bout against Hopkins. “We could probably be in the gym in the next couple weeks,” Loew said. “But you know how Kelly is, he’s so superstitious. We’re not going to go there until after we break camp.”
