YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a 28-year-old North Lima man on an attempted-murder charge and other felony counts in a Sept. 30 confrontation with his estranged wife in her West Side residence.

Rudolph K. Matland, of Market Street, was charged with the attempted murder of Anne Matland, 25, who also is named as the victim in counts of felonious assault, kidnapping, aggravated burglary and menacing by stalking.

Police said Matland forced his way into his estranged wife’s residence, stabbed her in the back of the neck and left leg and dragged her out the front door before she broke free and was taken to a hospital.

He also is charged in Thursday’s eight-count indictment with felonious assault and aggravated burglary counts that name his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Walter, as a victim in the same incident. Police said she was punched and sprayed with tear gas from an aerosol can.

Matland also was charged with disrupting public services.

Later on Sept. 30, U.S. marshals arrested Matland in Stuarts Draft, Va., and held him for extradition to Ohio.
