Ground broken for new Wilson Middle School

YOUNGSTOWN — Cold, wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those who turned out for this morning’s groundbreaking for the new Wilson Middle School on the city’s South Side.

The facility is number 13 in the city school district’s 14-building, $190 million rebuilding program. The school board awarded construction bids on the project at Marmion Avenue and Gibson Street last week totaling about $10.5 million.

A group of nearly 30 pupils for the Alpha and Athena schools of excellence turned out for the ceremony. Wilson will become the home of those two schools for seventh- and eighth-graders when it opens at midyear 2009-10.
