Youngstown man charged with assault, domestic violence

YOUNGSTOWN — A North Side man faces numerous charges after being accused of assaulting his girlfriend with a shovel and threatening to burn down their home.

Dwight Briggs, 46, of 555 Redondo Road, was arrested Sunday when police responded to a call that he was beating a woman with a garden shovel. When police arrived, the woman said Briggs demanded she bake him an apple pie, but when she gave Briggs the pie, he threw it against the wall.

According to the report, Briggs caused injury to the woman’s face and one of her feet. He then proceeded to ransack the home, throwing furniture and breaking windows, before pouring gasoline in the entry hallway.

Police said they struggled to subdue Briggs, and that he was intoxicated at the time of arrest. According to the report, he thrashed around until he was placed in an officer’s car, where he spit through the docket window and screamed at the officers.

Briggs has been charged with one count each of domestic violence, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, attempted arson and menacing on a police officer.
