SEATTLE — Junior James Aldridge ran for 84 yards and a career-high two touchdowns and the Notre Dame defense handled Washington in a 33-7 victory Saturday night.

Washington’s score with 2:56 left prevented its first shutout loss at home since 1976.

The Huskies’ offense, with redshirt freshman quarterback Ronnie Fouch making his third career start, did not cross midfield until six minutes remained. It had just 51 total yards on 35 plays entering the fourth quarter.

Washington (0-7) finished with 124 total yards against a defense that was allowing an average of 368 yards, 75th nationally.

Notre Dame is 5-2.

No. 6 USC 17, Arizona 10

TUCSON, Ariz. — Mark Sanchez threw for 216 yards and a touchdown, and Southern California used its dominant defense to keep its national title hopes alive.

The Trojans’ stalwart defense throttled the potent Wildcats, who had averaged 40.4 points per game, ninth in the nation.

The tense, tight game ended in confusion. Arizona punt returner Mike Thomas fumbled and the Wildcats returned the ball into USC territory as the clock expired.

USC (6-1, 4-1 Pac-10) harried Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama all night. The senior star completed 14 of 30 passes for 88 yards and threw an interception.

The Wildcats (5-3, 3-2) gained a season-low 188 yards and couldn’t even pick up an inch on a Tuitama sneak on fourth down late in the fourth quarter.

No. 2 Alabama 29, Tennessee 9

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — John Parker Wilson passed for 188 yards and ran for a touchdown as Alabama cruised over Tennessee.

The win gives the Crimson Tide (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) its first back-to-back wins over the Volunteers (3-5, 1-4) in a usually streaky “Third Saturday in October” series since the 1991-92 seasons.

Wash. & Jeff. 34, Westminster 7

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior quarterback Kevin Franz became Westminster’s all-time leading passer in the Titans’ loss to their Presidents’ Athletic Conference rival.

Franz was 23-of-44 passing for 237 yards, one touchdown and one interception Saturday. He has 5,846 career yards, surpassing James Graham, who threw for 5,826 from 1997-2000.

Bobby Swallow (West Branch) was 22-of-38 for 290 yards and two TDs to lead W&J (7-0, 3-0 PAC).

Westminster is 4-4, 2-3.
