FIFTY YEARS AGO: Cardinal Edward A Mooney, a Youngstown altar boy who grew up to be one of the princes of the Catholic Church, died Oct. 25, 1958, while in Rome attending the conclave that eventually elected Pope John XXIII. Funeral masses were celebrated in Rome and in Detroit, where Mooney was the archbishop. This photo shows the class of 1896 at St. Columba Elementary School. The future cardinal is in the center of the photo, fourth row, fifth boy from the left. No others were identified in the Vindicator’s files..
