Wladimir Klitschko’s upcoming heavyweight title defense against Alexander Povetkin has been canceled after Povetkin tore a ligament in his left foot during a training run.

Klitschko, the IBF and WBO champion, was scheduled to fight Povetkin, the IBF’s undefeated No. 1 heavyweight contender, in Mannheim, Germany, on Dec. 13.

Scott Shaffer, a lawyer for fight promoter Sauerland Event, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Povetkin tripped over a tree root while running in his native Kursk, Russia.

The ligament injury requires Povetkin to wear a brace that will prevent him from training until late November.
