Soccer economics

ZURICH, Switzerland — FIFA president Sepp Blatter says his organization is not at financial risk in the world economic crisis.

“For the time being, we have not lost money,” Blatter said on Friday. “We are well-organized and well-equipped to face up to the present crisis.”

FIFA relies on the quadrennial World Cup for 90 percent of its revenue, and expects to earn $3.2 billion in television and marketing revenue from the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Blatter said 95 percent of FIFA’s budget for the current World Cup cycle is under contract with broadcasters and sponsors.

Miller thinking big

SOELDEN, Austria — Bode Miller is thinking big.

He won the overall World Cup title last year — as did Lindsey Vonn for a sweep by U.S. men and women — and has his eyes on a couple of other trophies as well with a new season about to begin.

“Winning the slalom and downhill discipline titles are goals as well,” he said.

The season opens Saturday with a women’s giant slalom, followed by a men’s GS on Sunday on the Rettenbach glacier.

Miller won for the 31st time on the World Cup circuit last season, becoming the most successful American skier by overtaking Phil Mahre.
