St. John’s Orthodox Church to host 19th Festival of Icons on Nov. 1


WARREN — St. John’s Orthodox Church, 2220 Reeves Road, will host the 19th annual Festival of Icons on Nov. 1.

The schedule will be: 8:30 a.m., molieben service; 9, registration; 9:30, the Rev. Patrick Reardon on “Church and State, Part 1”; 10:15, break; 10:30, Father Reardon, “Church and State, Part 2”; 11:30, church tours and lunch; 12:30 p.m., Dennis Bell on “Icon Basics” with a slide show; 1:30, St. Nicholas Balalaika; 2:30, Bell questions and answer period; 3:30, St. John’s Choir; and 5, Great Vespers.

Father Reardon is pastor of All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church in Chicago and senior editor of Touchstone Magazine. In the last 40 years, he has published more than 500 articles, editorials and reviews in popular and scholarly journals including Books and Culture, Touchstone, Scottish Journal of Theology and St. Vladimir’s Theological Quarterly.

He has written four books — “Christ in the Psalms,” “Christ in His Saints,” “The Trial of Job” and “Chronicles of History and Worship.”

He was educated at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.; St. Anselm’s College and the Pontifical Biblical Institute, both in Rome, Italy; and St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Seminary in South Canaan, Pa.

Bell, a native of Warren who now lives in Painesville, is an icongrapher. He studied under the Rev. Theodore Jurewicz of Erie, Pa. He directs the Image and Likeness Studio.

Bell recently did extensive work at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, completing the murals of St. Nicholas, scrollwork and toweling. He also is doing extensive interior work at St. Nicholas Church in Mentor, which he helped found some 35 years ago.
