Rangers 3, Blue Jackets 1
COLUMBUS — Nikolai Zherdev had a successful return to Columbus with a goal and two assists for the Rangers. Brandon Dubinsky redirected a pass off his right skate for a controversial goal that gave the Rangers the lead to stay. Daniel Girardi also had a goal and an assist. Rangers coach Tom Renney was taken to the dressing room after being hit on the head by a stick in the second period and did not return. He watched the second half of the game with team medical personnel and said he was OK to fly back to New York. Jake Voracek had the only goal for Columbus. Zherdev, the third-leading scorer in Blue Jackets franchise history, was traded after four up-and-down seasons along with Dan Fritsche for defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman on July 2.
Flyers 6, Devils 3
NEWARK, N.J. — Mike Richards had a career-high four assists as the Flyers became the last NHL team to earn a win this season. Scott Hartnell had two goals and Jeff Carter, Mike Knuble, Simon Gagne and Joffrey Lupul also scored for the Flyers (1-3-3), who snapped the Devils’ three-game winning streak.
Kings 4, Blues 0
ST. LOUIS — Kyle Quincey and Patrick O’Sullivan scored 5:28 apart in the first period, and Jason LaBarbera stopped 15 shots for Los Angeles. The Blues also lost goalie Manny Legace to a strained left hip flexor. Legace was injured when he slipped on the carpet placed on the ice for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who dropped the ceremonial first puck.
Red Wings 5, Thrashers 3
DETROIT — Marian Hossa had two goals and an assist and Henrik Zetterberg also scored twice for the Red Wings. Dan Cleary also scored and Chris Osgood made 30 saves for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who won their third straight.
Ducks 4, Senators 3
OTTAWA — Ryan Getzlaf scored Anaheim’s third second-period goal in his return to the lineup, helping the Ducks get the victory.
Panthers 4, Sharks 3
SUNRISE, Fla. — Cory Stillman had two goals and an assist, and Tomas Vokoun made 47 saves for Florida.
