YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, in conjunction with Cleveland-based Millenia Housing Development, will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening at 11 a.m. Friday at the remodeled Heritage Apartments, 600 Granada Ave.
Constructed in 1984, Heritage Apartments has 60 units of affordable housing for the elderly. Fifty-nine units receive rental assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Millenia, which recently bought a majority ownership interest in the apartments from the Jewish Federation, completed a comprehensive renovation and modernization.
Election forum at the J
YOUNGSTOWN — The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation will present a presidential election forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.
Surrogates of the Obama and McCain campaigns will be the featured speakers.
Dr. John Lehman, chairman of J.F. Lehman & Co., will speak on behalf of Sen. John McCain. Lehman is the former secretary of the Navy. Representing Sen. Barack Obama will be Daniel Shapiro, senior policy adviser and national Jewish outreach coordinator for the Obama campaign.
The JCRC is also co-sponsoring a program on this year’s national elections at 7 p.m. Sunday at 3970 Logan Way in Liberty. This program will feature Ron Kampeas, Washington bureau chief of Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

LOWELLVILLE — Village council’s ordinance committee meets at 7 p.m. today in city hall and will discuss an ordinance addressing all-terrain and other off-road vehicles, revising the salary ordinance, consider speed limits on Westfield Avenue, and review the village drug-testing policy.
Woman, 55, is missing
WARREN — A woman told police that her 55-year-old daughter has been missing since about 4 p.m. Friday.
Bonnie Giaurtis of Hartman Avenue Northwest reported her daughter, Ericka Thomas of Southern Boulevard, missing Monday.
Thomas is described as 4 feet 11 inches, 120 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Giaurtis told police Thomas’ car was found abandoned in Austintown with a flat tire.
Baby sign-language
YOUNGSTOWN — Reservations are being accepted for the next session of “Baby Talk” sign-language classes at the Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley.
Classes will run Wednesdays from Oct. 29 to Nov. 19 at the school on Lynn Avenue. Two sessions are offered, one from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the other from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Children from 6 months to 21‚Ñ2 years, along with parents or caregivers, are welcome. The cost is $40 for the four-week session.
Credentialed teachers will conduct the class, designed to reduce tantrums and frustration, build vocabulary and help children communicate before they can talk. To sign up, call Karen at (330) 757-8512.
WRTA tax endorsed
POLAND — Poland Village Council has endorsed the Western Reserve Transit Authority’s five-year, 0.25 percent sales tax appearing on the November ballot.
The vote came at council’s regular meeting Tuesday. The tax would raise about $7 million to $7.5 million annually for the agency.
