Griswold’s hat trick advances Mooney


Salem’s volleyball team ended Canfield’s season with three tight games.

STRUTHERS — Katie Griswold scored three goals, including the 100th of her career, and had an assist for Mooney High in a 5-0 victory over Springfield in a girls Division II district semifinal soccer game Monday at Valley Sports Complex.

Amy Vinopal and Ashley Cuba each scored a goal for Mooney (12-4-1). Vinopal also had two assists. Mooney had 22 shots on goal and the Tigers (15-4) had one.

Rachael Letscher, Mooney’s goalkeeper, recorded her seventh shutout of the season. Springfield goalkeeper Heather Cozak made 17 saves.

Champion 1, Lakeview 0

CHAMPION — It took the Golden Flashes a shootout to earn a district championship berth against Mooney at Valley Sports Thursday at 7 p.m.

Champion’s Paige Loychik, Brittany Wortman, Katie Saluga and Morgan Loychik each scored a goal in the shootout. Laura Griffith and Nicole Moldovan scored goals for Lakeview. Goalkeeper Jen Ulam had eight saves for the Bulldogs, while Taylor Petersal had 16 for the Golden Flashes.

Volleyball

BOARDMAN — Salem edged Canfield 26-24, 25-20, 29-27 in a Division II district semifinal match at Boardman High School.

Mariah Halleck paced the Quakers (23-2) with 14 points, four aces, one kill, one block and 21 assists. Amy Scullion had two aces and 31 kills. Alli Ward had four aces, eight kills and two blocks. Taylor Sauerwein had one ace and 19 assists.

Meg Andrew led the Cardinals with six points and 11 kills. Katie Luklan had 10 kills and two blocks. Kellie Kesner had eight digs and Abby Malsch had 10 digs.

Field 25-20-26-25, Crestwood 16-25-24-20

Field (23-1) advanced to play Salem for the district title Wednesday at 6 p.m.
