Bulldozers start demolishing State Theatre

YOUNGSTOWN — The State Theatre on West Federal Street is well on its way to becoming a pile of bricks and debris.

Bulldozing started on the State Theatre this morning, only one day behind schedule, said Lynn-Marie Popa, facilities supervisor of the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp.

The 90-day demolition and remediation started in September and the total demolition plans are still on time.

“Everything is on schedule and on budget,” said Popa.

The facade of the State is being salvaged and the CIC plans to incorporate the piece of history into future West Federal projects.

Next on the chopping block will be the Armed Forces Building, also on West Federal.

After demolition the vacant area of the State and the Armed Forces will be turned into a temporary green space and parking lot, said Popa.

Demolition completion is scheduled for Dec. 15.
