Case of two men accused of making meth goes to Mahoning grand jury

Monday, October 20, 2008

NORTH LIMA — The case against two men accused of cooking methamphetamine in a Market Street motel room will be presented to a Mahoning County grand jury this week.

Beaver Township Police Chief Carl N. Frost said the investigation started after one of his officers, Dan Beniston, checked out a suspicious vehicle last week parked at the Liberty Inn, 10650 Market. A cleanup team from the Drug Enforcement Administration recovered chemicals from the room.

In custody are Jerry Leggett, 37, of North Wooster Road, Barberton and Jeffrey A. Guilliams, 36, of Winston Street, Akron. Both are charged with illegal manufacture of drugs.

Frost said both Leggett and Guilliams were wanted on Akron-area warrants related to the manufacture of meth.

Leggett, who was arrested during a traffic stop by Beniston on Oct. 11, consented to having the motel room searched, Frost said. Guilliams was arrested at his home on Friday.

The men checked into the motel Oct. 8 to cook meth in the bathtub, Frost said, adding they chose the location out of a desire to be away from Akron. Records show Guilliams pleaded guilty in September to possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and was scheduled to be sentenced today in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

The police chief said this is the first time Beaver Township has encountered a meth lab in a motel room.
