Blackhawks beat Canucks, 4-2

CHICAGO — Patrick Sharp had two goals and an assist and the Chicago Blackhawks won for the first time under new coach Joel Quenneville, beating the Vancouver Canucks 4-2.

Quenneville took over behind the bench on Thursday after Denis Savard was fired following a 1-2-1 start. On Saturday night in St. Louis in Quenneville’s first game, the Blackhawks blew a 3-1 lead and lost 4-3 in a shootout.

Patrick Kane added a goal and two assists, Brent Seabrook also scored and Cristobal Huet made 28 saves for his first victory with Chicago. Pavol Demitra and Henrik Sedin scored for the Canucks and Roberto Luongo made 22 saves.

Demitra opened the scoring midway through the first period.

Hurricanes 3, Ducks 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Michael Leighton made 32 saves and Ryan Bayda, Rod Brind’Amour and Eric Staal scored goals for Carolina in the NHL.

Brind’Amour broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period and the Hurricanes held off Anaheim in the final period for their first victory on a six-game trip that began with a 4-3 overtime loss at Los Angeles on Friday night.

The victory moved Carolina coach Peter Laviolette past the late Bob Johnson into second place among U.S.-born coaches with 235 career victories.

Former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella tops the list with 239.

Crew falls, 3-1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Danny Cepero became the first goalkeeper to score in a Major League Soccer game and Juan Pablo Angel had two goals to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 3-1 win over the Columbus Crew.

Cepero, who has been with New York (10-10-9) for two seasons but never played, got the start because regular goalie Jon Conway was suspended 10 league games for using a banned substance.

Cepero’s goal came when he took a direct kick from his own 25-yard line in the 83rd minute. The ball bounced high about 20 yards in front of the goal and went in over the head of Columbus goalie Andy Gruenebaum.

Cepero also made two saves, including a spectacular diving stop in the final minute of the first half that kept the game scoreless.

Angel gave New York a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Dynamo 3, Galaxy 0

HOUSTON — Dwayne De Rosario and Brian Ching scored goals to help Houston clinch the MLS Western Division title.

Houston (13-5-11) eliminated Los Angeles (8-13-8, 32) from playoff contention.

Los Angeles’ Bryan Jordan had an own goal in the 14th minute.

Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad made five saves for the 50th shutout of his career.

Wizards 3, Earthquakes 2

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Herculez Gomez scored in the waning seconds of second-half stoppage time to lift Kansas City past San Jose.

It was Gomez’s first goal for Kansas City (10-10-9), which extended its home unbeaten streak to 10 games and stayed in contention for a playoff spot. San Jose (7-13-9) was eliminated.

Claudio Lopez and Davy Arnaud also scored for Kansas City. Shea Salinas and Scott Sealy scored for San Jose.

Real Salt Lake wins

SANDY, Utah — Yura Movsisyan, Will Johnson and Robbie Findley scored goals to help Real Salt Lake beat FC Dallas.

Real Salt Lake (10-10-9) is close to clinching the franchise’s first playoff spot. Real would earn the No. 3. seed in the playoffs if the Colorado Rapids fail to win Sunday at Chivas USA. RSL and Colorado meet next week in the final game of the regular season. If Colorado wins, Sunday RSL would need only a tie to make the postseason.

With the loss, Dallas (8-10-11) was eliminated.
