Preservation Society hosts Salem holiday home tour

SALEM — “A Season of Wonder” is the theme chosen by Salem Preservation Society for its holiday tour of homes, which has been scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 6.

Eight of Salem’s premier homes will be candle lighted and open to visitors. Guests can begin the tour at any one of the homes that have been decorated around a special theme and holiday music. Guests will also have the option to visit all the homes one day or to visit four homes one day and four the next.

Open for viewing will be the following:

• The quaint cottage-style home of Laura Lowry and her two children at 269 Highland Ave., where the theme is a “Children’s Christmas Party” and the song is “Deck the Halls.” Decorations include antiques.

• The home of Gloria Judy at 864 Highland Ave., where the theme is “A Tree Trimming Party” and “Oh, Tannenbaum” is the musical inspiration. The owner has traveled in the Far East, and there is an Asian influence in the decor.

• The home of Dr. and Mrs. Sal Apicella, 450 Highland Ave., has Tudor overtones. Two rooms are hexagon shaped, and the home is filled with a collection of articles reflecting their world travels. “A Caroling Party” is the home theme, and the song is “Here We Go A Caroling.”

• At 545 Highland Ave., the home of Karen Sebo features a two-story entrance hall, where the staircase is decorated with live greens, ornaments and fresh-cut lilies. Chosen as the theme for the spectacular home is “Christmas Eve Dinner,” and the song is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Refreshments will be served, and holiday gift items will be on sale.

• The home of Rick Metts and his daughter at 750 Highland Ave. has traditional furnishings and decorations that carry out the theme “A Williamsburg High Tea” to the music of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.”

• A two-story Christmas tree is the focal point in the grand entrance hall of the home of Ginger Grilli and Rick Drummond at 1530 E. State St. The decorations and theme music for the beautifully appointed Cotswold English Tudor home will be “White Christmas.”

• Antiques and Asian artifacts may be viewed throughout the traditional two-story home of Mrs. Robert Moore and her son, Nathan, at 2041 E. 11th St. Decorated for “A Christmas Brunch,” the theme will be carried out in the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain.”

• Connie Sanor and James Solmen have decorated their English Tudor-style home at 110 Homewood Place around a fashionable “Cocktail Party” theme, and their theme song will be “Here We Come A Wassailing.”

Members of Salem High School Chapter of the National Honor Society will serve as docents for the tour.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Kolby’s of Salem, Cornerstone Antiques, Salem Estate Sales or from a member of the society.
