YSU’s Upward Bound seeks more participants


Ninth-graders from East and Chaney high schools are eligible.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Upward Bound program at Youngstown State University is looking for more participants.

The federally funded program which has helped prepare Youngstown City high school students for college since 1999. Through academic, cultural and social experiences, it prepares first-generation college-bound students and/or students with financial need, for success at a college or university.

To be eligible to apply for Upward Bound, students must be in the ninth grade at either East or Chaney high schools, a first-generation college-bound student and/or show financial need and have the ambition and desire to attend and graduate from college.

Students in the Upward Bound program receive after-school tutoring, hands-on learning, academic advisement, assistance with college admissions and participate in a six-week residential program on campus at Youngstown State. Upward Bound reports that 95 percent of its students enroll in college after graduation from high school.

All Upward Bound activities take place outside of the regular school day. Students remain in their high schools during the school day.

The program has openings for the 2008-09 school year, and applications will be accepted until all spots are filled.

Upward Bound will have information tables at the Chaney and East parent-teacher conferences Tuesday.
