YOUNGSTOWN — City police are investigating a Saturday morning shooting in which the victim was found lying in his front yard on the South Side.

Jeffrey A. Martin Jr., 19, of Potomac Avenue, was found at 11:17 a.m. with two gunshots to his back and one in his right forearm. One of Martin’s arms was in a fleece pullover, his sweat pants were around his knees, and he was wearing one shoe.

Martin was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Though the hospital wouldn’t release his condition late Saturday, a police report said he was in stable condition and that doctors said he may have spinal-cord injuries. No arrests were made.

State police toy drive

MERCER, Pa. — The Pennsylvania State Police barracks is continuing to take donations for its annual toy drive. The drive runs through Dec. 12. It benefits children in need in Mercer County. Bring new, unwrapped toys to the barracks on Pa. Route 62 in Jackson Center.

Raptors to be topic

CANFIELD — The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley will meet Tuesday with Jim Kerr, curator of the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, as the speaker.

Learn the difference between a Cooper’s and red-tailed hawk as the group learns about winter raptors. He also will answer questions on the birds.

Sainato heads caucus

State Rep. Chris Sainato, D-9th, has been elected chairman of the House Democratic Northwest Caucus in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

For the past four years, Sainato has had the position of caucus vice chairman.

The members of the Northwest Caucus represent legislative districts ranging from Lawrence to Erie to State College.

Sainato’s district encompasses much of Lawrence County and part of Beaver County, including Darlington borough and township.

English closing offices

The office of U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, announced that all offices within the 3rd Congressional District will officially close Monday.

Due to limited access to federal resources, as part of the transition to the 111th Congress, all casework has been ceased. Constituents are encouraged to contact U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Bob Casey, D-Pa., for immediate assistance involving any casework.

In addition, constituents will be able to resubmit casework to U.S. Rep.-elect Kathy Dahlkemper at the start of the 111th Congress in January.

Coat collection

BOARDMAN — Burlington Coat Factory stores, One Warm Coat, a national nonprofit organization that assists in the donation of free coats, and ABC’s “Good Morning America” are joining forces to give coats to the needy in the Mahoning Valley.

The Second Annual Warm Hearts & Warm Coats Drive kicks off Monday and runs through Jan. 16. Coats collected will be distributed free to children and adults through the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley.

Anyone wishing to donate coats can do so in the drop-off boxes in the Burlington Coat Factory stores in Boardman or Niles. Coats should be in good condition, with working fasteners, and have no rips or stains. Donors will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
