Game notes: The Penguins have struggled through their first two games and have been hampered by poor shooting (31.4 percent) and too many turnovers — more than 30 per game. The Penguins are scoring only 50 points per game, while they are allowing 80 points per contest. “We are a young team, sometimes with three freshmen on the floor, and they are making freshmen mistakes,” said first-year coach Cindy Martin. “We’ve still a long way to go, but we are getting better.” Niagara has also lost two straight, falling to Michigan State in its opener 116-50 and then dropping a 74-64 contest to Oakland. The team lacks height and has been out-rebounded in its two games by an average of 53-32. The series: Youngstown State leads the series 6-3, but the Purple Eagles have won the last three games including an 87-76 win last season in Niagara. YSU won the first six games in the series, which began in 1989. The Penguins swept the Purple Eagles in 1988-89, 1989-90 and 1990-91. YSU’s last win at home came in the 1990-91 season 92-57. Up next: The Penguins play their next two games both in the University of Pittsburgh tournament. The Penguins open against Weber State on Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. They will next play either Pitt or Elon on Nov. 29.
