Youngstown man shot in leg and robbed

YOUNGSTOWN — A 52-year-old city man was in stable condition late Wednesday after being shot in the left leg and robbed at gunpoint.

Police said officers responded to a call about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Lilburne Drive home of James Kelly Jr. on the city’s East Side. Police found Kelly on his kitchen floor bleeding from a gunshot wound to his left leg.

Kelly told police that a man knocked on the back door of his house and he opened it incorrectly believing he knew the man.

The man pointed a black handgun at Kelly and demanded money, according to a police report. The man then shot Kelly in the leg, police said. The man went into Kelly’s living room, where Kelly’s wife was and demanded her purse or he’d shoot her, police said.

She gave $300 to the man, who also took Kelly’s wallet containing $120, a bank card and his driver’s license, police said.

The man left through the front door.

Kelly was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Police said they found a .40-caliber shell casing and a spent bullet near where Kelly was shot.

The suspect is described as a black man, about 20 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black ball cap, black pants, black shoes and a blue-hooded sweatshirt.
