Michigan State survives scare from IPFW, 70-59

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Raymar Morgan scored eight of his 22 points during a decisive 13-0 run Wednesday night and No. 5 Michigan State survived a scare from IPFW, beating the Mastodons 70-59.

Michigan State (2-0) led 32-24 at halftime, but opened the second half making just 1-of-10 shots. They fell behind twice by three points to IPFW (0-2), which lost its opener to Xavier by 28.

Trailing 44-42, the Spartans took control midway through the second half. It started with a free throw by Delvon Roe. Then Kalin Lucas quickly added a 17-foot jumper. Then Morgan scored on an inbounds pass and a moment later added a free throw.

The Spartans then forced IPFW turnovers on three straight possessions. The Mastodons only missed two shots during the 13-0 run, but the Spartans forced four turnovers.

Lucas added 17 points and Goran Suton had 10 rebounds for the Spartans. Ben Botts led IPFW with 22 points despite going 4-for-17 from 3-point range and David Carson scored 17 points.

IPFW, which shot 25 percent in its opening game loss at Xavier, its worst shooting night since becoming a Division I program in 2001, outshot the Spartans 46 percent to 43 percent.

But the Spartans had a 38-28 rebounding advantage and made 19 free throws on 28 attempts compared to IPFW’s 6-of-7.

No. 20 Wake Forest 120, North Carolina-Wilmington 88

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Jeff Teague scored a career-high 31 points, James Johnson added 25 for Wake Forest.

Chas McFarland had 19 points for the Demon Deacons (2-0), who led almost the entire way.

Johnny Wolf scored 24 points to lead the Seahawks (2-1).

No. 23 Villanova 77, Niagara 62

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Scottie Reynolds scored 19 points, Corey Fisher had 15 and Reggie Redding 14 to lead Villanova past pesky Niagara.
