YSU roundup News and notes

Up next: After facing Maryland, a team from the powerful ACC, the next game for YSU is at home Saturday against Allegheny – a Division III school from Meadville, Pa.

Rare matchup: It is not often that Maryland head coach Gary Williams faces a coach with more career wins. But Jerry Slocum entered Tuesday with 610 victories, while Williams now has 606.

Delayed start: The start of the game was delayed about seven minutes due to electrical problems with the scoreboard.

Hometown connection: YSU started two players from Maryland. Senior forward Jack Liles is from Odenton, about 30 minutes from College Park. Junior guard Kelvin Bright is from Silver Spring, which is just 15 minutes from the Maryland campus.

First meeting: Tuesday was the first meeting between the two teams. The last time the Penguins played a school from the Atlantic Coast Conference was in 1992, when they lost by 20 points to Georgia Tech. YSU’s only other previous game against a school from the ACC was in 1989, when the Penguins lost by 30 points to Clemson.

Tough loss: The loss for YSU was the worst since an 83-52 setback at UCLA to start last season.
