Head coach Jerry Slocum is excited about this group which had tremendous athleticism and provides great depth on the bench. Senior Jack Liles and sophomore Vytas Sulskis are both returning starters from last season, both averaged over nine points a game last year. Tonight’s contest will mark the 500th collegiate game played at Beeghly Center where the Penguins have recorded a 291-208 record since the center was opened in 1972. Buffalo returns all five starters from a year ago when the Bulls were 10-20. They recently completed a three-game tour of Canada where they posted a 2-1 record including an 84-74 loss to defending Canadian National champions Carleton University. The series: The Penguins hold a 13-10 lead over the Bulls in the all-time series, which dates back to 1962. The two teams haven’t met since the 2003-04 season when the Bulls pulled off an 86-66 victory in Buffalo. YSU’s last win in the series came in 2002-03 when the Penguins toppled the Bulls 63-48 at Beeghly Center. Next up: The Penguins will take to the road for their second game of the season at nationally-ranked Maryland in an 8 p.m. contest next Tuesday. They will return home on Nov. 22 to meet Allegheny which will be part of a doubleheader with the YSU women. The women play Niagara at 5:15 and the men and Allegheny tip off at 7:35.
