Girls make their mark in Miss Teen pageant

INDEPENDENCE — Adelle Pociask and Natalie Susor attended the Nationals 2008 Miss Teen Akron Pageant. Adelle placed in the top 10 of her division, Preteen, and is invited to compete in Orlando, Fla., for the Cities of America Nationals competition Dec. 9-14.

Adelle, the daughter of Bill and Tatiana Pociask of Poland, is in the third grade at Holy Family School. Natalie, daughter of Joan Susor of Lake Milton, also competed in the Preteen division. Her peers voted her Miss Preteen Congeniality. Natalie is a fifth-grader in Jackson-Milton schools.

Teachers honored by Kiwanis Club

On Oct. 1, the Kiwanis Club of Western Mahoning County honored new teachers in the Canfield School System during a dinner meeting.

Those recognized were Paula Roberts of the science department, Anthony Holben of the career base intervention and the Centofanti success center. A special guest was Sherry Creighton, Key Club adviser.

The Kiwanis also recently sponsored new teachers night in the Jackson-Milton Schools. The superintendent, Kirk Baker, introduced eight teachers to new positions: Dave Vega, high/middle school principal; Joe DiLoreto, elementary principal; Greg Domino, high/middle school intervention specialist; Kelly Dobransky, high/middle school intervention specialist; Amy Diefenderfer, elementary intervention specialist; Dody Shar, fourth- and fifth-grade teacher; Anna Vouvalis, Title 1 tutor for reading and math; and Lisa Hills, Spanish teacher.

The Kiwanis Club meets at 6 p.m. each Wednesday at A La Cart Catering in Canfield.

Berlin-Ellworth Ruritan announces the Blue Ribbon winners of its 2008 baking contest, which took place Nov. 1

Winners and their entries were Mary Jo Furman of Berlin Center, elderberry pie; Robert McCurdy of Warren, chocolate peanut butter crunch pie and sugar-free pineapple pie; Linda Stevens of Berlin Center, chocolate cake; Lisa Truitt of Berlin Center, apple crumb pie; Jennifer Wargacki of Berlin Center, pecan pumpkin pie and double mint chocolate chip cookies; Jerry Meals of Salem, apple pie; Linda Vuletich of Berlin Center, white cake; Bonnie Taylor of Berlin Center, pecan pie; Anada Phillis of Salem, treasure cookies; Pattie Bates of Berlin Center, oatmeal cookies; and Darlene Mix of Berlin Center, raisin cookies.

Mimi Williams of Berlin Center was the grand champion winner with her Danish chocolate Christmas cake.

The organization thanks all the participants for their entries, which made the dinner and fundraiser a success.

Polish Arts Club plans Wigilia Christmas festivity

YOUNGSTOWN — The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown invites the public to its annual Wigilia Christmas Celebration Dec. 14 at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 149 Jefferson St. Mass, which is optional, will be at noon, a reception begins at 1 p.m.; sharing of Oplatek/dinner begins at 2 p.m.; and the singing of Koledy/entertainment begins at 3 p.m.

Foundation honors member for service

AUSTINTOWN — A highlight of the November meeting of Austintown Growth Foundation was the presentation of an award to one of its members. Dr. Alfred Owens, past president, was singled out for recognition for his dedication, concern and leadership.

He was presented with a plaque commemorating his five years of service from 2002 through 2007. During that time he became the first person in the area to have a study done on the community, and with the 20/20 Group was able to accomplish many things that benefit the community.

Repeal Day event to be at Corinthian this year

SHARON, Pa. — The Brotherhood of Appreciating Repeal Day announces that the second Annual Charity Repeal Day Celebration and Beer Tasting will take place Dec. 5 at The Corinthian, 47 Vine Ave., downtown Sharon. The beer taste will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

Entertainment will include live jazz music. Members of the local actors guild will dress in thirties-era attire and others are encouraged to do so.

To get tickets, which are $25, or $30 at the door, visit local distributors such as M&M Beer or Erme’s in Hermitage, or e-mail repealday@gmail.com. Participants will enjoy samples of a wide array of craft brews. Included will be two bands, a light dinner and a silent auction of beer paraphernalia.

The event will raise money for the Shenango Valley River Watchers, a nonprofit group founded to clean up, preserve and protect the Shenango River.

OES chapter conducts 101st annual installation

YOUNGSTOWN — Miriam Chapter 278, Order of Eastern Star, conducted its 101st annual installation of officers on Oct. 13 at Youngstown Masonic Temple in a ceremony witnessed by members and guests.

Inducted were: Susan Gillam, worthy matron; Russell W. Gillam Jr., worthy patron; LeeAnn Mason, associate matron; Allen Bohr, associate patron; Judy Elliott, secretary; Carol Bohr, chaplain; Eugene Woodworth, marshal; Marion Brownlee, organist; Linda Woolford, Adah; Norma Wise, Ruth; Laurie Hernandez, Esther; Jean Layne, Martha; Wilma Payne, Electa; Jean Mook, warder; and Jean McClure, sentinel. Serving as pages will be Blanche Costanza, Shirley Jacobs, Jean Olzak, Geraldine Thompson, Louise Waddell, and Alice Wilds.

Each new officer received a black evening bag, and a new chaplain’s stole was presented to the chapter by Merry Beth Vargo. “Heroes and Friends” was the theme chosen for 2009.

The installing officers were Carolyn McCahan, past grand matron; Robert Palmer, past grand patron; Raella Baker, marshall; Les Yost, chaplain; and Sally Sampson, organist.

Past district governors attend Lions dinner

CANFIELD — On Oct. 20 the Ohio Lions District 13-D Past District Governors Association, comprising clubs in Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, and Stark counties, had an annual banquet at A La Cart Catering. Seventeen past district governors, their spouses, and guests attended the event. Special guests were District Governor Harold Ullman and his wife, Joyce.

Lions Clubs International Extension Officer Rich Buickrood spoke of the work he did earlier in the week, in cooperation with the District MERL Team, to form new clubs in the Streetsboro and Navarre-Brewster areas.

Discussed were plans to present a PDG award at the annual district convention to a lay Lion in recognition of efforts he or she has made on behalf of the organization.

Hosts for the banquet were PDG Tom and Nancy Kirkbride.

Heartland school plans dinner theater event

COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian School , 28 Pittsburgh St., is presenting a Christmas dinner theater at 6 p.m. Dec. 12 and 13. The play, a humorous version of the Christmas story, is titled “In Bethlehem Inn.”

Youngstown Club plans sing-along with chorus

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Club, 210 E. Commerce St., invites the public to welcome the Seraphim Chorus as it presents an old-time Christmas carol sing-along, “Christmas at the Club,” on Dec. 11. The cocktail hour begins at 5 p.m. with a cash bar available. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30. The cost of $42 includes dinner and the show. UPMC auxiliary schedules ‘Remembrance Tree’ event

FARRELL, Pa. — The UPMC Horizon Shenango Auxiliary will have its annual “Remembrance Tree “ lighting ceremony at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 in the main lobby of the Shenango Valley campus.

For a minimum $5 donation, a personalized ornament will be placed on the tree in memory or in honor of someone special to the donor. A card will be sent to the person being honored for the family of the person being remembered to acknowledge the donation.

Donations, along with the donor’s name, address, phone number and the name of the honored/remembered person, should be sent to Shirley Miller, Hospitality Shop, 2200 Memorial Drive, Farrell, PA 16121. Checks should be made payable to UPMC Horizon Shenango Auxiliary.

Money raised from donations support auxiliary projects, including hospital improvements.

U.S. figure skating test results are released

YOUNGSTOWN — U.S. Figure Skating officials from the Pittsburgh and Cleveland areas served as judges during a figure skating test session conducted by the Skating Club of Greater Youngstown at the Chevrolet Centre. Those participating in preliminary and junior level tests achieved an 85 percent passing rate.

The results in various tests are:

• Dutch Waltz — Olivia Argue, Kara Gilleland, Mackenzie Jackson, Ava Silverman, and Shenley Wish.

• Rhythm Blues — Nicole Barbone, Lauren Ritz, and Anna Warvell.
