Home Depot will host benefit car show June 8

AUSTINTOWN — Home Depot, 6100 Mahoning Avenue, will have a car show in the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 8 to raise money for Ross Linert, the Austintown police officer injured in a fiery rear-end collision last year.

Natalie Winkle said store personnel decided to organize the event to help Linert pay expenses that he continues to face as he undergoes treatment for burns.

“We’re trying to raise money so he can have a better summer,” she said.

Those attending the car show can see driver Tony Stewart’s No. 20 car, buy T-shirts, food and Chinese auction tickets that will go directly to benefit Linert’s family. There is no admission charge. Fab Limousine is planning to bring Linert to the car show for a couple of hours starting at 2 p.m.

Water boil order

CANFIELD —ok The city has issued a precautionary boil order for residents of Neff Drive until 5 p.m. today because of a waterline break on Neff Drive.

Residents are advised to boil water vigorously for a least one minute if the water is to be used for drinking, cooking and oral hygiene. There is no evidence the water has been contaminated.

Alleged armed robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — Police were called to McGuffey Speed Check gas station late Wednesday after a customer said he was threatened at gunpoint. A man in his mid-20s approached the victim, who was pumping gas, and pointed a gun into his side.

The victim told police the man then demanded money or he would shoot. He took the victim’s wallet and fled north on Albert Street. No arrest has been made.

City school meetings

YOUNGSTOWN — The city school district will have two community meetings next week for parents and others interested in school programming for next year.

The sessions are set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at East High School and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chaney High School.

Woman is charged with theft of Visa check card

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Sarah E. Henry, 22, of North Bloomfield has been charged with theft, receiving stolen property, access device fraud, forgery and identity theft for allegedly stealing a Visa check card from a co-worker at Westminster College and using it to purchase $234 worth of items.

New Wilmington police said Henry took the card April 5, 2008, from a co-worker while the two were working for a catering service on campus.

Police say she used the card to buy gasoline, gift cards and grocery items from a gas station and grocery store in New Castle.

The charges were filed before District Magistrate Judge Scott McGrath in New Castle. Henry faces arraignment and a preliminary hearing on the charges in Lawrence County Central Court.

Reminder to pet owners: No dogs allowed in park

EAST PALESTINE — City officials have issued a reminder to pet owners that dogs are not permitted in the city park. Councilwoman Sandy Wales said she’s seen people walking their dogs in the park and she worries about the health and safety of children playing there.

She said she’s concerned the problem could worsen as the weather continues to get nicer.

Officials said dogs are allowed on the walking trail, provided they are restrained on a leash.

Special budget meeting

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city school board has scheduled a special meeting for noon today to vote on the adoption of the proposed 2008-09 budget. The meeting will be in the board room of the Croton Administration Building, 420 Fern St. Abstinence workshop

VIENNA — Teen Straight Talk, the sex abstinence program, will have a workshop called “Living out the Truth” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at TST’s learning facility, 1393 Youngstown-Kingsville Road.
