Ex-president emphasizes popular vote

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

CIALES, Puerto Rico (AP) — Former President Clinton said a big victory for his wife in Puerto Rico’s coming presidential primary would boost her claim that she leads in the popular vote.

“If you vote for her on Sunday in large numbers, you will ensure that she wins the most votes cast in this long presidential primary,” Clinton said, as an interpreter translated his remarks into Spanish.

Hillary Rodham Clinton has claimed she leads in the popular vote, but calculating the exact total is tricky. That’s because there is no way to count popular votes from Iowa, Nevada or Maine because their caucuses did not tally them.

The former first lady trails Barack Obama in the number of convention delegates earned in primaries and caucuses. She has used the popular-vote argument as a way to shore up supporters.
