‘Hedda Gabler’ to open at Victorian Players

YOUNGSTOWN — The Victorian Players’ production of “Hedda Gabler” opens Friday and will run for three weekends. Directed by Thomas Copeland, the cast includes Connie Cassidy, C. Richard Haldi, Jennifer Milligan, Terry Shears, Pat Schauweker, Regina Reynolods and Charles F. Wilcox.

“Hedda Gabler” written by Henrik Ibsen, is about a strong and gifted woman stuck in a loveless marriage and the restrictions of Victorian society. Other than becoming a mother, she has no opportunity for achievement. Horrified at her prospects but determined to remain respectable, she seeks fulfillment in manipulating the lives of others while diverting herself by fencing with a dangerous predator.

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and June 6, 7, 13 and 14; and 2 p.m. June 1, 8 and 15. Tickets are $10 ($8 for seniors and students). For reservations, call (330) 746-5455. Victorian Players Theatre is at 702 Mahoning Ave., near Downtown and across from Flynn’s Tires.

Trumbull Art Gallery plans kids Summerfest

WARREN — Trumbull Art Gallery will kick off Summerfest for Children with a puppet show and information program at 6:30 p.m. June 18. Summerfest begins June 19, and comprises 13 days of creative art workshops designed for children ages 4 to 16 years. It will be held at Trumbull Art Gallery, 196-8 E. Market St., and at four other locations: The Market on the Square in downtown Warren, Champion Middle School, Beth Israel Temple Center on East Market Street, and the Outreach Gallery in Eastwood Mall.

Trumbull Art Gallery will transform its space into a dream-like world inspired by the work of artist Marc Chagall. Summerfest participants will hold their Parade Around Courthouse Square at noon July 2. Children will display their projects, which will use Chagall’s floating images for inspiration. Summerfest Art Fest will begin immediately fter the parade on the Court House lawn. Area artists will display their work, and child-centered activities will be held.

Area artists will create Chagall-inspired works for a show entitled “Fantasies and Flight,” which will be held concurrently with Summerfest Art Fest on the Courthouse lawn. For more information, call TAG at (330)-395-4876).

First Night Youngstown seeks entertainers

YOUNGSTOWN — First Night Youngstown is seeking performing artists for the annual New Years Eve Celebration in the downtown and university districts. Performers are guaranteed payment.

Applications must be accompanied by a photo, cassette, DVD or CD, and a biography. Materials must be current and a live audition may be requested. Weathervane theater to stage ‘Ragtime’

AKRON — “Ragtime,” the musical that depicts the transformation of America in the early 1900s, comes to the Weathervane Community Playhouse stage June 4 and runs through 29.

Preview performances are 7:30 p.m. June 4 and 5. The opening-night performance is 8 p.m. June 6. Other performances are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. (there will be no performances June 8 and 26). Tickets range between $17 and $23. Capitol Steps will come to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Capitol Steps will highlight the four-show 2008-09 Performing Arts Series at Slippery Rock University. Other acts include the Four Freshmen, Pastures of Plenty and Dublin’s Traditional Irish Cabaret. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium. The series opens Sept. 12 with The Capitol Steps, a comedy troupe that satirizes Washington politicians. The Four Freshmen, a vocal group, performs Dec. 6. Pastures of Plenty will celebrate the folk music of Woody Guthrie in its Feb. 6 show; and Dublin’s Traditional Irish Caberet wil play March 21.
