A listing of Memorial Day events as submitted to The Vindicator. All events are Monday unless otherwise noted.
Mahoning County
Austintown: A parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Marc’s parking lot at Mahoning Avenue and Idaho Road and continue to Austintown Fitch High School’s Veterans Memorial. The service will begin at 11 a.m. Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Robert Milich is the main speaker.
Boardman: Boardman Kiwanis Club’s 104th Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. in front of Boardman Center Middle School. It will head north on Market Street to U.S. Route 224 then east on 224 to Boardman Township Park. It will end in the park at the Maag Outdoor Arts Theater, where the Memorial Day Service will immediately follow. The Grand Marshall will be Bill Sweeney, chief warrant officer in the Army National Guard. The Boardman High School National Honor Society will honor those serving in the military. The Boardman Spartan Symphonic Band will play.
Campbell: Services will be at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Cemetery. They will then proceed to Archangel Michael, St. John’s Russian, St. Nicholas, St. Michael’s and Pioneer Cemeteries for services. There will be a program at 11 a.m. at the Campbell Memorial High School Monument. Refreshments will be served by the American Legion Hall Post 560 following services.
Jackson Township: A parade starts at 9 a.m. at Jackson-Milton High School and goes to the township cemetery. At 8:45 a.m. there will be a flag raising ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial at the high school.
Lowellville: Services and a parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery. From there the parade will march to the Poland Township Cemetery. Anyone in the military, and veterans of all wars, are invited to attend and march. The Mount Carmel Marching Band will play. Gus Guzman will be the main speaker. Following the service, a luncheon will be provided at the Lowellville City Hall.
New Middletown: A parade will line up at 9:30 a.m. at Springfield Local High School. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed to Springfield Elementary School where there will be a memorial service and taps at the flag pole.
New Springfield: Springfield Township VFW Triangle Post 2799 will honor veterans past and present with a salute to colors, honor guard, dignified flag burning, Church of God choir, food and refreshments. Services begin promptly at 1 p.m. The guest speaker will be past VFW state commander and local resident Gary Bentfeld.
Poland: Ceremonies at Baird Mitchell Field begin at 9 a.m. A parade begins at 10 a.m., travels down College Street, right on South Main Street, left on Riverside Drive and into Riverside Cemetery. At 10:15 a.m. a ceremony will be held on the Main Street Bridge in honor of those lost at sea, with full Memorial Services in Riverside Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Ken Carrano will serve as speaker of the day. In case of inclement weather, Memorial ceremonies will be in the Poland Middle School Gymnasium.
Struthers: Services will be at 9 a.m. under the state Route 616 bridge over the Mahoning River. A wreath will be tossed in the river. At 10 a.m. a service will be at Struthers High School at the Veterans Memorial. The Struthers High School Band will play. At 11 a.m. a service will be at Lake Park Cemetery at the Veteran’s Plot. Struthers Band will also perform.
Youngstown: The Golden Eagles are hosting the 52nd annual Smoky Hollow Memorial Monday. The program begins at 11:15 a.m. at the War Memorial at the corner of Walnut Street and Rayen Ave. in Smoky Hollow. The program will include prayers, and a patriotic address and will run for about 45 minutes. Refreshments immediately following.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
Brookfield: A parade will begin at Brookfield Middle School at 10 a.m. Monday, heading west toward state Route 7 and will continue south on Route 7 ending at Brookfield Cemetery. A service will be held at the back of the cemetery after the parade. Anyone wishing to participate should meet behind Brookfield Middle School by 9:30 a.m.
Girard: Services will be Sunday at 9 a.m. at Seceders Corners; 9:15 a.m. at Church Hill Cemetery; 9:30 a.m. at Liberty Park; 9:45 a.m. at The Belmont Cemetery; 10:15 a.m. at Multi-Generational Center; 10:45 p.m. at Welsh Hill; 11:15 a.m. at Girard Viaduct and at 11:30 a.m. at the Girard City Memorial.
Monday, Memorial Day Services will be at 10 a.m. Girard City Cemetery (anyone participating should be at the cemetery by 9:15 a.m.) This year Girard High School Class Presidents Jeff Palmer and Jim Stacchiotti, Mike Fiorvit and Ryan Trimbur will give a short bio on the lives of deceased soldiers from World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, whose names are listed on the memorial in front of city hall.
McDonald: The annual program starts at 1 p.m. Monday in Woodland Park. The event, hosted by the McDonald Volunteer Fire Department, will include a guest appearance by John Schmidt, a songwriter who will perform two musical tributes to soldiers serving in Iraq. Preceding the program will be a parade featuring the McDonald High School band. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be at Ramsey Memorial Pavilion.
Niles: Services will be at 11 a.m. at the Niles City Cemetery, state Route 46. The speaker will be Cmdr. Frederick Vincenzo, commanding officer of Naval Operations, Vienna, Ohio.
COLUMBIANA COUNTY
Columbiana: Services at 10 a.m. at Main Street and W. Park Avenue.
MERCER COUNTY
Mercer, Pa.: The day begins with a military concert with the 28th Division Army National Guard Band at the Mercer County Court House Bandstand at 9:30 a.m. Also at 9:30 is a veterans reception on the north side of the courthouse. The parade begins at 11 a.m. on N. Pitt Street. At noon there will be a memorial salute at Citizens Cemetery that includes a 21-cannon salute.
