BOSTON — Bartolo Colon made a solid return to the majors after recovering from an elbow injury, posting his first win since last June. The 2005 Cy Young winner allowed two runs and struck out four in five innings in his first game since Sept. 29, when he pitched one scoreless relief inning for the Los Angeles Angels. Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, including a leadoff homer in the first, and scored three runs for Boston, which won its sixth straight.

TORONTO — Vladimir Guerrero hit two home runs and Jon Garland remained unbeaten in Toronto. It was the 34th career multihomer game for Guerrero, who came in batting .260 with four homers, his lowest career totals after 45 games.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez hit two balls over the fence but was credited with only one home run as New York broke loose. Darrell Rasner (3-0) won his third straight start since he was called up from the minors and New York banged out 13 hits while snapping a four-game skid. The Yankees had lost six of seven, scoring only 14 runs during that span.

DETROIT — Marcus Thames hit a grand slam to highlight Detroit’s seven-run third inning.
The Tigers opened their big inning with five straight singles off Jarrod Washburn (2-6) before Thames drove his fifth career slam into the bullpen in left. Kenny Rogers (4-4) gave up four runs in 5 1-3 innings, allowing solo homers to Richie Sexson and Yuniesky Betancourt.
Athletics 9, Rays 1
OAKLAND, Calif. — Dana Eveland pitched a three-hitter for his first career complete game and Jack Cust homered twice as Oakland avoided being swept at home by Tampa Bay for the first time. Eveland (4-3) ended a four-start winless stretch as the A’s stopped a five-game losing streak in the series. It was Oakland’s third victory in 12 games.

MINNEAPOLIS — Sidney Ponson stayed unbeaten for Texas, topping his previous team with career complete game No. 29. Ponson (3-0) allowed one run and six hits to go nine innings for the first time since April 24, 2005, with Baltimore at Toronto.

DENVER — Omar Vizquel doubled to start a game-tying rally in the ninth inning, then drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th. Brian Wilson struck out Omar Quintanilla looking for the final out in the 10th to pick up his 14th save in 16 chances.
Braves 11, Mets 4
ATLANTA — Jeff Francoeur homered and drove in four runs to help Atlanta win its third straight in the series. Francoeur did not play in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, ending his streak of 370 consecutive games played. It was his first game off since Oct. 1, 2005.
Phillies 12, Nationals 2
WASHINGTON — Ryan Howard homered twice, Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino also went deep and the Phillies piled up 15 hits and a season-high in runs.
Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 1
MIAMI — Florida scored its first run on a squeeze, and Ricky Nolasco allowed only three hits over seven innings to beat Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks.
Astros 5, Cubs 3
HOUSTON — Shawn Chacon pitched seven solid innings for his first win this season, breaking his major league record streak of nine straight no-decisions to start a season.
