SOFTBALL

Poland 2, Richmond Edison 0

POLAND — Jenna Medina drove in Allie Patton with both of Poland’s runs. Starting pitcher Liz Maher and fourth-inning reliever Jordan Palumbo combined to pitch a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Bulldogs (21-7). Palumbo had 10 of the strikeouts and got the win (7-1). In the first inning, Medina’s groundout scored Patton who had tripled; while in the third inning Patton walked, stole second and came home on Medina’s single. Kayla Marcus had two singles for Edison (14-13).

Ursuline 10, West Geauga 5

CHESTERLAND — Miranda Carkido’s bases-loaded triple in the top of third gave Ursuline a 3-1 lead. Carkido, a junior, also had a single for the Irish, while junior Rebecca Hartz stole two bases, scored twice and knocked in a run. Casey Lower (17-5) had 11 strikeouts for Ursuline (19-6), which plays Lisbon in a Div. III district semifinal today at 4 p.m. at the South Range Complex.

Akron Springfield 5, Southeast 3

AKRON — Springfield (11-14) , behind 3-2, scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tiffany Hellis hit a pair of singles for the Spartans. The Pirates (19-5) outhit Springfield 8-4 with Danielle Kaley hitting three singles.

BASEBALL

Akron Springfield 10, Southeast 5

AKRON — Springfield (12-13) scored three runs in the second inning, three in the fourth and four in the sixth. Curt Brown paced Springfield with a home run, triple and single, while winning pitcher Pat Abrams hit a double and single. Nick Hopkins hit a home run for the Pirates (8-16).
