Police chaplains to conduct
workshop about abuse
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Police Chaplains will present a free workshop, “Abuse Crimes that Affect Women, Children and the Church,” from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Youngstown Police Training Center, 1639 Mahoning Ave.
The program is open to the public. It is being held in conjunction with March as Women’s History Month.
The workshop schedule is:
U 8:30 to 9 a.m., registration and refreshments.
U 9 to 9:15, welcome and opening remarks by Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin-Casey on prevention and intervention.
U 9:15-9:45, Violence in the Family/Women and Low Self-Esteem. “Is Abuse Learned at Home and in Society?” by Melinda Gavin, executive director of Sojourner battered persons’ shelter.
U 9:45-10:15, Family Violence Hurts Children. “Why Doesn’t She Leave” by Baldwin-Casey, YPD Chaplains’ liaison officer.
U 10:15-10:45, The Church and Battered Women. “Can Churches Deal with Abuse?” Sister Rose Huber, pastoral associate at Sts. Peter & Paul Croatian Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady of Hungary Roman Catholic Church. She is a member of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.
U 10:45-11:15, Misusing Scriptures to Control. “Love, Honor and Obey?” by the Rev. Gwen Alexander, police chaplain and associate minister at Phillips Memorial Missionary Baptist Church.
U 11:15 to noon, Appropriate and Inappropriate Counseling. “What is Co-Dependency?” Martha Katz, a licensed professional clinical counselor.
Lunch will be from noon to 1 p.m.
Police chaplain, Marcia Walker, associate minister at Union Baptist Church, and the Rev. Lillian North, pastor of Friends House Chapel, will coordinate break-out sessions from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and panel discussions from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. The workshop will conclude with evaluations and certificates.
