Humility of Mary gives nursing scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN — The Humility of Mary Health Partners Development Foundation recently awarded 2008 nursing scholarships under two programs. One program is for students attending Youngstown State University and Kent State University, for which employees and their families are eligible; and the other for those attending Mercy College of Northwest Ohio on St. Elizabeth Health Center’s campus.

Recipients from Mercy College are Monica Inchak, Lawrence Starr IV, Jodie Stratton, Kayla Yartz, Karen Schesler, JoAnn Olson, Rocky Pitoscia, David Onder, Julie Sevek, and Laura Kunovic.

Recipients from YSU and KSU are Jan Haycox, Daneen Mace, Heidi Alfen, Lauren Callahan, Jessica Cartwright, Ryan Costlow, Brittney Kubina, Kate Law, Lindsay Stojkov, Gloria Candella, Patricia Kountz, Sarbjit Sandhu, Renee Sferra, and Susan Crist.

Distance-learning doctorate offered

COLUMBUS — The Ohio State University College of Nursing’s new Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program is being offered online as a distance-learning program and is designed to be customized and flexible. Future expansion of the DNP program is planned to include a post-baccalaureate study option. Applications for competitive admission are due by July 31, 2008, with the program enrolling its first class in autumn 2008. Confidential sessions provided to families

YOUNGSTOWN — The Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic (NKRC) is offering free, confidential information sessions for families dealing with a loved one who has a problem with alcohol or other drugs. Family information sessions are from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 30 at NKRC-Austintown, 5211 Mahoning Ave., Suite 370, and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 at NKRC-Howland, 160 Clifton Drive N.E., Suite 1.

Participants will receive information on the nature of alcohol and other drug related problems while learning how families as a whole are affected by substance abuse. In addition, attendees will find out how their loved one and family can get help immediately.

Grants to replace roof

YOUNGSTOWN — Family Service Agency has received $60,000 in grants: $10,000 from the Frank Pearl Gelbman Foundation at the Huntington National Bank Trust Department; $20,000 from the Crandall Foundation; and $30,000 from the Youngstown Foundation. The funds will go toward replacement of the roof at the agency in Youngstown, said David E. Arnold, president and chief executive officer of the agency.

Weiss wins appointment

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Lisa Noble Weiss has been appointed to the Mahoning County District Board of Health for a five-year term. Dr. Weiss is interim director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Forum Health Northside Medical Center and assistant professor of family medicine at Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Before that, she was a physician at the Youngstown Community health Center and a middle school language arts teacher in Kentucky. Dr. Weiss received her medical degree and completed her residency in family practice at the University of Kentucky in 2002.
