Akron gas giveaway runs smoothly

Thursday, June 26, 2008

AKRON (AP) — An Akron police official described it as “controlled chaos” when a local convenience store gave away gasoline to 110 lucky motorists.

Police Capt. Dan Zampelli says officers counted cars and moved their cruisers in to put end points on the lines Tuesday afternoon, so people wouldn’t wait two or three hours only to find they weren’t getting free gas.

He says that would have caused a big problem.

There were lines of vehicles a quarter-mile long for the giveaway of $30 tankfuls of gas sponsored by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kia Motors and the Circle K convenience store chain. They held a similar promotion last month in Cleveland and say they’ll repeat the stunt once more this summer.

The Cavs started mapping strategy with Akron police two weeks ago.
