School board vacancy

McDONALD — The board of education will accept letters of interest in the vacancy created by the June 10 death of Atty. William Roux. Those interested must live in the school district and should send letters to the McDonald Board of Education, in care of Robert Jones Jr., board president, 600 Iowa Ave., McDonald, Ohio, 44437. The application period will be from Monday to 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The board of education will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. July 2 to review applicants and make a selection. The board also plans to hire six new teachers. Roux, 52, was a 25-year board member.

Free bird program

EAST LEWISTON — Heather Merich from the Birds of Flight Sanctuary in Warren will present a free program on various birds at 2 p.m. June 28 at the Beaver Township Nature Preserve on state Route 165. The presentation will provide a live, close-up view of several birds and include discussions on the broad wing hawk, American Kesstral bird and barred owl.

Because the program will be at the nature preserve’s open-air pavilion, attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the weather. For more information, call the Beaver Township Park Board at (330) 549-9552.

Clean Energy meeting

CHAMPION — The Clean Energy Network in Trumbull County will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 117 of the technology building at the Kent State University Trumbull campus. The network is a group of like-minded people dedicated to increasing awareness in sustainability, green building and renewable energy technologies.

Diane Heard, senior associate with IFC International, will be the main speaker. IFC administers the Home Performance with Energy Star Program for FirstEnergy. The program includes home evaluations to improve a home’s energy efficiency.

Volunteers needed

NEWTON FALLS — The Newton Falls Salvation Army Services Unit is seeking volunteers to ring the kettle bell for “Christmas in July” on July 1, 2 and 3. If interested, call (330) 872-5574 to schedule a time. The shifts are two hours.

Money collected during the three days in Newton Falls helps local people pay utility bills, buy prescriptions and meet other needs.

Mosquito spraying

NILES — Mosquito control spraying will begin in the city after 6 p.m. Wednesday. The alternate date if it rains is Thursday. Those with respiratory problems should remain indoors with windows closed. Food should not be prepared or left outside, and all pets should be taken indoors.

Unveiling reception

LISBON — Columbiana County officials will have a reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to formally unveil the renovated courts and allied offices. The work also included replacing the windows in the courthouse and its heating and cooling system at a total cost of $3.5 million.
