City water report issued

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Water Department recently mailed its customers a copy of a report that contains data on its water for 2007 as required by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996.

About 65,000 tests for contaminants are done on the water annually. No violations were found in 2007, according to the water department.

The city sells about 19 million gallons of water a day from the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District to residents of Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman, Canfield Township and city, North Jackson, Mineral Ridge, Girard and Liberty.

For further information or a copy of the report, contact the city water department’s engineering office at (330) 742-8765.

NSF leader to visit YSU

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Arden Bement, director of the National Science Foundation, will visit Youngstown State University Monday to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new chemistry lab.

Bement will speak on the work of the NSF and its funding as well as meet with faculty and students who will present him with their research.

The NSF, along with U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, played a critical role in procuring the funds for the new lab, which already played a significant role in analyzing the chemical compounds in Heparin, an anti-coagulant, on behalf of the Food and Drug Administration. The research done at YSU helped in the FDA’s Heparin investigation.

Bement and Ryan will join YSU officials at 11 a.m. for a ribbon cutting on the fifth floor of Ward Beecher Hall.

Parole hearing delayed

WARREN – The parole hearing scheduled for this week for convicted murderer John F. Johnson has been delayed until August.

The Ohio Parole Board postponed the hearing until Aug. 5, 6 or 7. Dennis Watkins, Trumbull County prosecutor, and Johnson’s former wife have opposed parole for the 52-year-old Johnson.

Johnson was found guilty of the 1980 shooting death of his former mother-in-law, Wyoma P. Teutsch, and attempted murder of his former father-in-law, Robert Teutsch, at their Newton Township home. He was sentenced to 20 years to life. Johnson is also a suspect in a homicide in Canada, where he had fled and assumed a new identity.

Advice on foreclosure

LISBON — The Columbiana County Save Our Homes Task Force will have a community outreach day for people who may be facing foreclosure, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 12 at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center. A free box lunch will be provided.

The event will consist of information about personal budgeting practices, rebuilding credit, real estate taxes, the foreclosure process, available remedies, and what to look for in a mortgage. Representatives from local banks and service agencies will be present.

Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray voiced concerns about climbing foreclosures and predatory lending in early 2007. Barborak formed the task force a year ago. Barborak said the county saw a 134 percent rise in new foreclosures from 2006 to 1995. In 2007, that number increased by 22 percent.
