In 1556, St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus — the Jesuit order of Catholic priests and brothers — dies in Rome. In 1777, the Marquis de Lafayette, a 19-year-old French nobleman, is made a major-general in the American Continental Army. In 1875, the 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson, dies in Carter County, Tenn., at age 66. In 1919, Germany’s Weimar Constitution is adopted by the republic’s National Assembly.

July 31, 1983: The Youngstown Park Department issues a final warning to dock owners at Lake Milton: pay for their 1983 licenses or lose their docks. The fee is $70 for city residents, $100 for Mahoning County residents and $130 for others.

Lack of money is forcing the Rescue Mission to drop its breach ministry for men, a program that provided free overnight lodging and a light breakfast for the homeless.

The Junior League of Youngstown plans to open the Tod Parent House, which will provide a temporary home for parents with long-term or critical illnesses.

The Mahoning National Bank ends its month-long centennial celebration with a dinner for civic leaders at the Youngstown Country Club. The bank traces its roots to a group of early businessmen headed by then-Gov. David Tod who organized the Youngstown Savings & Loan Association.

The Wilkins-Leonard Hardware Store sells its landmark building at 27 E. Federal Street to the city for urban renewal for $165,000. The firm will relocate to leased space at 111 W. Federal Street.

July 31, 1958: Nine young people are injured, two seriously, when an amusement ride collapses during the Lions Club carnival at the school grounds in New Middletown.

Youngstown Law Director Felix Mica files a motion in Common Pleas Court seeking to have racketeer Joseph S. “Sandy” Naples serve his full six-month term on a numbers conviction. He was released after three months because of stomach ulcers.

The three-cent stamp for first-class postage is in its final day. Mailing a letter will cost four cents beginning at midnight.

July 31, 1933: Two young couples en route from Youngstown to the Sharon races are killed when their car collides with a truck and bursts into flames at Vienna. Dead are W.N. Say, 31; Helen Adams, 18, and Nora Senf, 19, all of Youngstown, and Gabriel Sebok Jr., 21, of Struthers.

The Dollar Savings & Trust Co. is ready and willing to accept a certain shrinkage in mortgages in order to cooperate with the government and aid the small home owner, Carl Ullman, executive vice president of the bank says.

Two downtown Youngstown cigar branch stores announce a raise in the retail price of cigars from 12 cents to 14 cents a pack.
