Titans recognized

NEW WILMINGTON — The Westminster College men’s and women’s track and field teams were honored with Division III All-Academic status for 2007-08 by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

To earn honors, a team must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

The Wesminster men’s team achieved a GPA of 3.035, and was one of 56 squads that qualified.

The Titan women achieved a GPA of 3.171 and was one of 92 teams that met the standard.

In addition, three members of the Westminster women’s team were among 232 athletes to earn individual recognition.

The trio are sophomore Abbey Basta (Slippery Rock High), senior Jess Cooper (Laurel) and sophomore Jill Diamond (Bishop McCort, Johnstown, Pa.).

Golden Flashes

KENT — Kent State University will add four Youngstown-area recruits to the women’s cross country and track teams this coming school year among a total group of 12.

The newcomers are Patricia Haff (Boardman), Kartoria Carter (Hubbard High), Deidre Clary (Salem) and Audrey Maheu (Warren JFK and Bristolville).

Haff won the 800-meter championship in the Division I district meet this year.

Carter had personal-bests of 12.82 seconds in the 100-meter dash, 26.06 in the 200 and 56.88 in the 400.

Clary was a member of Salem’s 2005 cross country team that won the state championship, and she placed sixth in that meet.

Maheu won the 800-meter state Div. III championship in 2007 in a meet-record time of 2:12.39.

Then she improved that record at the 2008 state meet to 2:12.32.

Maheu also set the 800 record at the 2008 Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches state track indoor meet in 2:19.98.

In 2007, she became the first JFK girl ever to qualify for the state cross country meet, where she placed 24th in 19:24.99.

Change eyed in Buckeyes parking

COLUMBUS — Game days could be more expensive this fall for carloads of Ohio State fans who park and ride from the state fairgrounds.

Transit officials in Columbus are considering a proposal that would cut the cost of the parking part in half, from $10 down to $5.

However, the round-trip bus ticket from the lot to the game would rise to $4, from as little as a buck last season.

The new park-and-ride pricing means one person going alone to a Buckeyes game would pay $9, down from $11 last year.

But four people in a van would pay $21, compared to $14.

The head of the transit agency says there’s no opposition to the plan among the board members who must vote to approve it.

Big Brown workout

NEW YORK — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown turned in his fastest workout Saturday since returning to training after his puzzling last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.

The colt breezed six furlongs in 1:10.86 under exercise rider Michelle Nevin at Aqueduct.

“Every work since he’s come back has been better than the one before it,” said Michael Sherack, vice president of IEAH Stables, which co-owns Big Brown with Paul Pompa Jr.

The 37-year-old left Blackburn for an undisclosed fee, one day after Blackburn signed former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson from Tottenham.
